Dahshur Area

Dahshur is an ancient Egyptian necropolis located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Cairo, renowned for its significant contributions to pyramid construction during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing Memphis and its Necropolis, Dahshur offers invaluable insights into the architectural evolution of ancient Egypt.

• Bent Pyramid: Commissioned by Pharaoh Sneferu during the 4th Dynasty (circa 2613–2589 BCE), the Bent Pyramid is notable for its unique shape, transitioning from a steep 54-degree angle to a shallower 43-degree angle midway up. This design adjustment is believed to have been made to prevent structural collapse, marking a pivotal moment in pyramid engineering. ​

• Red Pyramid: Also constructed under Sneferu’s reign, the Red Pyramid is recognized as Egypt’s first successful attempt at a smooth-sided pyramid. Named for the reddish hue of its limestone blocks, it stands approximately 104 meters (341 feet) tall and reflects the advancements in construction techniques achieved during that era.
