Memphis, known in ancient times as Men-nefer, was the capital of ancient Egypt during the Early Dynastic Period and the Old Kingdom. Founded around 3100 BCE by the legendary Pharaoh Menes, it is located near the modern village of Mit Rahina, approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Cairo.

Historical Significance:

  • Political Capital: As the first capital of unified Egypt, Memphis served as the political and administrative center, playing a pivotal role in the consolidation of Upper and Lower Egypt.

  • Religious Center: The city was a major religious hub, primarily dedicated to Ptah, the god of creation and craftsmanship. The Temple of Ptah in Memphis was one of the most significant religious structures in ancient Egypt
